When you're famous there are a few ways relationships can often go. People can be jealous of your success, they can envy where you've been and what you've done and/or they can try to hitch a ride on your coattails looking for their own 15 minutes of fame. This happens a lot to someone like Taylor Swift who is arguably one of the most famous female singer/songwriters in the world.
But, Swift isn't completely innocent either. Because of her actions and the lyrics in her music, there are others who simply don't like her. It could be because of past relationships that went badly, it could be because of the friendships she makes so public or because of the fact she used her personal experiences as material for her music. She's often played the victim card and there is some debate as to whether or not she's as helpless as she and her management team want people to think she is.
On the other hand, Swift is adored by fans all over the world. Her Swift Squad is not only a close-knit group of friends but millions of faithful followers everywhere. She's sold countless records, won multiple awards and been idolized by young women everywhere. She's still pounding out hit singles and few have dented music in the positive way Taylor Swift has. Her message is often one of female empowerment and battling through adversity.
Swift is definitely a polarizing figure in music. She's got fans and she's got haters. Want to know who is who in the celebrity world? We've put together a list of 10 people who can't stand Taylor Swift and a list of five people who truly love her.
Can't Stand: Katy Perry
Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were, at one time, pretty close. But in 2014, that changed in a hurry. Swift revealed to Rolling Stone magazine that an unnamed female pop star did something so horrible that she became an immediate enemy and wrote the song 'Bad Blood.’ as a result. It might not have come to people's attention as to whom Swift was referring until Perry started to respond on social media suggesting others were wolves in sheep's clothing. The timing was just too right not to put two and two together.
Both also dated singer/songwriter John Mayer and it is assumed that created some friction between the two sides. The real beef became public when some of Swift's tour dancers left her tour for Perry's tour. Swift said Perry made things super awkward and now she just avoids her because it's better than having to confront her about it. (source: rollingstone)
Can't Stand: Calvin Harris
In 2016, Calvin Harris (professional DJ) and Taylor Swift ended their relationship. Rumors were it was because he was jealous of her success. Just before this, his new single "This Is What We Came For," came out and did quite well for him. It was written by Harris and a strange unknown artist named "Nils Sjöberg." Nobody seemed to know who this Sjöberg was. It was later revealed to be a pseudonym for Taylor Swift.
What was so ironic about all this is that before people figured out that she co-wrote the song while they were together, he went public about his distaste for the idea of collaborating with her and trashing her to the likes of Ryan Seacrest. It was a pretty low thing to do. She apparently had the right to stop him from using and performing the single but she hasn't exercised that right. Perhaps she figures forcing him to perform that song will repeatedly remind him of what a stupid mistake he made. (Source: Mirror)
Loves Her: Lena Dunham
Lena Dunham and Taylor Swift first started talking on Twitter after sharing their mutual respect for one another. Lena liked Taylor's music and Swift like Dunham's show Girls. From there, the friendship blossomed.
Lena has gone to bat for Taylor on a number of instances calling her work inspiring and while she's distanced herself a bit from the Swift Squad, they are still very close, having built a supporting and loving relationship. Dunham once said on Twitter that Swift would one day write her wedding song. After Swift released the video for the song Delicate, Dunham wrote, "It’s an amazing video- a pure artistic statement about constant scrutiny and the complexity of navigating public life. I’m so proud of her."
Can't Stand: Nicki Minaj
This friendship didn't start out so well because of some confusion over a reaction to the 2015 VMA Nominations list, where Minaj's song 'Anaconda' was snubbed. Minaj made some sort of snide comment about weight and being white and naturally, the skinny and very white Taylor Swift took it personally.
In an attempt to tone down the feud, Minaj and Swift made sure to go public with the fact they weren't specifically mad at each other, said all sorts of nice things about the other and then suggested they wanted to work together. That didn't last terribly long as Minaj and Katy Perry teamed up to diss Swift in a song called "Swish, Swish". This off again, on again friendship was definitely off again at that point. Can't Stand: Miley Cyrus
While Miley Cyrus seems to be a little more chill now, there was a time every performance was a wrecking ball and Swift wasn't shy about discussing the overly outrageous moments. Swift once called the Robin Thicke performance at 2013 VMA Awards 'grotesque' to which Miley responded that Swift was stuck up, and prissy. Could you imagine what Cyrus had said if she was really mad?
In an interview with The New York Times Cyrus added she had no desire to be in Swift's clan of friends and business associates. Cyrus said she preferred real people as friends and not a group of followers who didn't have their own lives. Sounds like while Cyrus was using shock performances to make money, she was calling others fake. Kind of hypocritical.
Loves Her: Selena Gomez
These are two very close friends that had stuck by each other's side for many years, but there was some speculation that things might be a bit touchy as the two weren't seen much together in 2017. But, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift are still friends and both have dropped a few easter eggs on their relationship in recent videos and social media posts.
Swift did a photo of her cat and in the background was a framed pic of Gomez and in Selena's video "Bad Liar", Gomez has a photo of someone that looks a lot like Swift. So, for fans worried that these two might not be sticking up for each other as often, don't worry, they're still super close.
Can't Stand: Harry Styles
Harry Styles has said all the right things when it comes to talking about Taylor Swift but the reality is, he doesn't say much at all and he seems to dodge questions about her as often as possible. Most think it's because he's not a fan of how they had a relationship and there's widespread speculation she wrote a couple songs about him after they split.
'I Knew You Were Trouble' was supposedly written about him and in 2013, at the MTV VMAs, it appeared that Swift was whispering some not-so-kind things while he was performing as part of One Direction. Swift got a taste of her own medicine as One Direction fans let her have it as they stuck up for Styles who she was dissing at the time. (Source: FoxNews)
Can't Stand: Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato has blasted Taylor Swift on multiple occasions. Some of the latest revolved around her standing up for Katy Perry but there was a lot more prior to that. Demi didn't like it when Swift hit back against ex Joe Jonas and used Twitter to blast Swift for throwing money at feminine issues and not actually helping. Lovato claimed Swift used romantic misfortune to sell her music, albums and has taken the side of Taylor's well-known enemies like Kim Kardashian.
It appears, for the most part, there's some jealousy going on between Lovato and Swift and because Lovato is so outspoken, people just assume she hates Taylor. She's made a lot of comments about Taylor's Squad so maybe she just wants to be included. When asked if she feels bad about the things she's said regarding Swift, Lovato didn't take it back so maybe there really is some ill will there. (source: EOnline)
Loves Her: Kelsea Ballerini
Taylor Swift may not be a country singer/songwriter but she still has a lot of friends in the country music industry, none closer than country singer Kelsea Ballerini. Ballerini was at first a Swift fan but after Taylor tweeted about one of her songs they became closer. Today, Ballerini calls Swift a real friend she can confide in and Swift refers to her as her “little sis.”
Ballerini said during an interview with Billboard.com, "She’s amazing and she’s supportive. We’re obviously in different genres now, but we’re both songwriters at heart and root each other on." It likely helps a great deal that Swift was once where Ballerini is now and any advice Swift can give, Kelsea is going to soak up like a sponge.
Can't Stand: John Mayer
If you listen to the lyrics of certain John Mayer songs and then the lyrics of certain Taylor Swift songs, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out these two former romantics are no longer fans of one another. Mayer wrote a song called 'Paper Doll' that most assume was about Swift. Swift wrote a song called 'Dear John' that most assume was about Mayer.
These two have made some pretty decent money talking about their personal issues in the lyrics of their music and everyone seems to think there's some bitterness there. Maybe there is, but it could be that each has come to terms with the other and is grateful they profited from their short relationship.
All that said, because of the whole drama that involved Katy Perry, who knows what to think. Mayer is known as quite the womanizer and Swift has become known as someone who dates a lot and writes even more. (Source: TheSun)
Can't Stand: Justin Bieber
Being the in and out of trouble personality that he is, Justin Bieber has a lot of friends and a lot of enemies. Because of his relationship with Selena Gomez, one that has been publicly rocky, Taylor Swift and Bieber aren't what you might call Christmas card buddies. They really don't like each other much at all.
Swift seems to be sticking up for her best friend Gomez and has stuck out her tongue at Bieber, given looks of disgust and basically spent a ton of her energy trying to make sure Gomez knows she can do a whole lot better. Of course, if you thought someone was trying to sabotage your relationships over and over, you would not be a huge fan. Bieber is basically sick of Swift sticking her nose in where he doesn't think it belongs. (Source: Fuse)
Loves Her: Abigail Anderson
It's one thing to have friends after you become famous. It's another to stick with your best friends you knew before you became a huge star. That would be Abigail Anderson who is Taylor Swift’s lifelong best friend. Swift might chill with models and singers and actresses now, but there's a special place for Anderson who she took to the 2015 Grammys as her date.
These two have been BFFs since high school, Abigail has appeared in six of Swift's music videos, they can relate based on the amount of passion they each have their respective fields of work and Swift has even dropped by one of Anderson's college classes while on tour. Of all the friends on this list, perhaps Swift and Anderson will stand the test of time.
Can't Stand: Kanye West
The Taylor Swift and Kanye West beef is about the most public beef there is in music. It goes all the way back to 2009 when Kanye hopped on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards and crashed Swift's acceptance speech. He said he didn't care, then he apologized, then he took it back eventually writing the song "Famous" including a terrible line about her in the video.
He claimed she gave him the idea and the blessing for the lyric. She claims not to have. She subtly threw shade at him at the Grammy's in 2016 and he responded with a tweet of his own suggesting she didn't deserve her album of the year nods. He made a video including wax figures with her in the video and it just kept getting uglier and uglier. Once Kanye's wife got involved, things went from bad to worse. (Source: ThisIsInsider)
Can't Stand: Kim Kardashian
After Kanye West became Taylor's No. 1 enemy, naturally Kim Kardashian got involved. The back and forth between Swift and Kanye turned into Kim standing up for her husband and saying they had proof Swift told Kanye to use the lyrics and was in the whole thing. Kim dedicated a whole episode of her show Keeping Up With the Kardashians to the feud and leaked a partial recording of Swift on her Snapchat account trying to make it appear like Taylor was lying about being so innocent.
That opened the floodgates for Swift to release all sorts of lyrics about Kim and Kanye on her album 'Reputation' in which she clearly makes reference to the backstabbing and games both were trying to play. (Source: People)
Loves Her: Karlie Kloss
At one time, it was clear that Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss were best friends. They were nearly inseparable with Kloss having her own room in Swift's apartment. These days, there are a few more rumors these two are not as close as they once were, some suggesting they're even feuding. Don't believe it.
Instagram posts outside Swift's apartment have stopped but the rumored fallout seemed to be about the Kardashian's, namely Kendall Jenner who is also close with Kloss. Kloss did say in a later interview not to believe everything you read and that she and Taylor talk frequently. While they might not be as close as they once were, they are still buds, often catching up and posting Instagram photos to show they're still a part of each other's lives. (source: Glamour)
